Maes is the a member of the Investigations Division, good friends with Roy Mustang, father to Elicia, and loving husband of Gracia. Towards the beginning of the series, Maes seems to be the comedian and always the one to provide a laugh for the fans. He is always seen fawning over his wife and child and not taking things seriously. However, in episode 25 of the anime and chapter 15 of the manga, Maes suffers a tragic death and pushes the plot of the series towards an intriguing climax. Throughout the series, he acts as a mentor towards many of the characters and pushes them into realizing their potential.
